We produce the run time graphs on this site using data collected by an Extech 401036 Data Logging Light Meter. We are running the lights at exactly 1 foot from the sensor, and measuring in foot candles. We are producing all of the data under identical conditions using new batteries, so the data from different flashlights and batteries should be roughly comparable. All batteries are brand new Energizer batteries unless otherwise indicated. Note that Foot Candles are a measurement of the light intensity at the brightest spot on the receptor, they are NOT a measurement of overall light ouput.
We carefully aligns the flashlight with the light meter so that the readings on the left-hand side of the graph show 1 Foot Candle at 1 Foot, which is equal to 1 Lux at 1 Meter. While these numbers are not a perfect descriptor of the overall output of the flashlight, they do allow for casual comparisons of the output of similar flashlights. Please do not consider the output values as a measure of absolute brightness, just a relative indicator. It is not possible to compare the ouput of a light with a very focused beam with that of a light with more of a flood pattern. Differences in output of 10 - 15% even from similar flashlights should NOT be considered significant.
